چکیده
Abstract Polyploids with odd-ploidy levels may play an important evolutionary role as they enable backcrosses their parental cytotypes. We chose the ploidy-variable Senecio carniolicus species group to address overarching question if pentaploid individuals, which occur at high frequencies in immediate contact zones of tetraploids and hexaploids, mediate effective interploidy gene flow. employed a set approaches including relative genome size (RGS) determination viability tests pollen, RGS embryo, germination experiments seeds, survival seedlings tackle following specific questions. Is pollen individuals viable suggesting regular meiosis spite level? Are five sets chromosomes split into 2.5 compliments, or rather two three compliments? Do crossings between produce seeds seedlings, that pentaploids are independent unit? found stainability is not strongly reduced chromosome complements most often complements. Seeds originating from homoploid show very low whereas hexaploids were more successful. No significant difference seedling was observed among different but emerging 5 x crosses significantly smaller than both, crosses. Altogether, our results indicate mediators flow do form unit.

Complex distribution patterns of di-, tetra-, and hexaploid cytotypes in the European high mountain plant Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae).
DNA ploidy levels were estimated using DAPI-flow cytometry of silica-dried specimens of the European mountain plant Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae), covering its entire distribution area in the Eastern Alps (77 populations, 380 individuals) and the Carpathians (five populations, 22 individuals). A complex pattern of ploidy level variation (2x, 4x, 5x, 6x, and 7x cytotypes) was found in this sp...
متن کاملUnderestimated diversity in one of the world’s best studied mountain ranges: The polyploid complex of Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae) contains four species in the European Alps
Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae) is an intricate polyploid complex distributed in the European Alps (di-, tetra- and hexaploids) and Carpathians (hexaploids only). Molecular genetic, ecological, and crossing data allowed four evolutionary groups within S. carniolicus to be identified. Here, we establish that these four groups (two vicariant diploid lineages, tetraploids and hexaploids) are also...
متن کاملEcological differentiation, lack of hybrids involving diploids, and asymmetric gene flow between polyploids in narrow contact zones of Senecio carniolicus (syn. Jacobaea carniolica, Asteraceae)
Areas of immediate contact of different cytotypes offer a unique opportunity to study evolutionary dynamics within heteroploid species and to assess isolation mechanisms governing coexistence of cytotypes of different ploidy. The degree of reproductive isolation of cytotypes, that is, the frequency of heteroploid crosses and subsequent formation of viable and (partly) fertile hybrids, plays a c...
متن کاملDistribution and habitat segregation on different spatial scales among diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid cytotypes of Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae) in the Eastern Alps
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The spatial distribution of cytotypes can provide valuable insights into evolutionary patterns of polyploid complexes. In a previous study the macro-scale distribution of the three main cytotypes in Senecio carniolicus (Asteraceae) within the Eastern Alps was characterized. Employing a roughly 12-fold extended sampling, the present study focuses on unravelling patterns of cy...
متن کاملEcological segregation drives fine-scale cytotype distribution of Senecio carniolicus in the Eastern Alps.
In order to uncover patterns and processes of segregation of co-existing cytotypes, we investigated a zone in the eastern Alps (Austria) where diploid and hexaploid individuals of the alpine herb Senecio carniolicus Willd. (Asteraceae) co-occur. Linking the fine-scale distribution of cytotypes to environmental and spatial factors revealed segregation along an ecological gradient, which was also...
